Foo Fighters – But Here We Are review

The Foos 11th album, and properly their most important to date. The loss of Taylor was huge, he was one of the best, not only as a drummer but a true showman he brought a dimension to the Foos that is hard to quantify. Dave also lost his mother Virginia last year, so I cannot begin to understand how he was feeling losing a best friend and your mum all in the space of a few months must be beyond heart-breaking.

Grief is an odd thing as everyone experiences it differently and everyone finds their own way through or way to deal with as you never truly get over the lose of someone special. In recent years musicians have been more honest in their music about grief. Mike Shinoda wrote Post Traumatic after the passing of Chester which is an incredible album, and Ed Sheeran wrote Eyes Closed about losing Jamal. All of these are audio diary’s of grief, and hugely emotional.

I’m now on my 6th time through But Here We Are, each time I am finding something new. It is without a doubt one of the Foo Fighters best albums, they have put everything into this and without a doubt Taylor and Virginia would be proud.

My favourite track so far is Beyond You, Over You is a close second. I do also love the fact Dave has got his daughter Violet singing on Show Me How.

The album also contains the longest song Foo Fighters have ever recorded The Teacher. If they play this track live I don’t think I’ll be in one piece by the end of it Dave screaming goodbye over then ending is from the depths of his soul and the song just builds into feedback and jumping straight into Rest.

But Here We Are is beautiful and heart breaking but also a huge rock record all in equal measures. I am glad the Foos decided to continue after Taylor as they could have easily called it quits but they are building on their legacy and shining a light on the darkest of days.

All I can hope for is everyone close to Taylor and Virginia has found their coping mechanism and can share in the joy they brought to everyone.
